Notification:

Since Tohoku Region Pacific Coast Earthquake, measures such as energy saving have been planned to cope with the power crunch anticipated mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area this summer. In many public facilities including transportation facilities, the use of lighting has been reduced and elevators have been stopped to maintain power grid infrastructures. Under these circumstances, many cases of the interference to the mobility of the physically-challenged and those with weak sight have been reported.
Various administrators such the national government, local governments, private sector, shopping centers, etc. can reduce the use of lighting and stop elevators by themselves. However, they have various criteria for the range of such power-saving and resumption of the power usage. Moreover, the barrier-free guideline issued from the national government requests the sufficient brightness of illumination in public facilities with consideration for the aged and those with weak sight, but it is not prepared for the worst possible scenario such as the current situation obviously.

In this symposium, how the public organizations can realize barrier-free support while reducing energy consumption for the expected future situation where tight energy supply continues will be discussed.

TRON Enableware Research Group

TRON Project (Project Leader: Ken Sakamura, The University of Tokyo) aims to realize computing environment which anyone can use. This environment can be used by anyone regardless of nationality, age, and the presence and absence of physical disability as well as the skill to use a computer.
We have organized " TRON Enableware Research Group" (Chair: Ken Sakamura) and worked to promote the research and development of computer systems which can be used by anyone, and disseminate its functions as standard features in computer systems since 1987. This group holds a symposium every December to hold discussion and exchange opinions with many people and to get to know each other.
