"Special Research Committee on Information Infrastructure in Buildings/Cities and Social System" (Chair: Ken Sakamura, Professor of The University of Tokyo), Architectural Institute of Japan, has been carrying forward researches aiming to propose measures for creating new added values by linking various information handled in each stage of the lifecycle of buildings and cities, and for building and realizing a comprehensive vision that can lead to safety, comfort and reduction of environmental load. Vigorous efforts that have been made both in Japan and abroad in recent years related to "Smart City" are also a notable trend. Those efforts, ranging from feasibility study experiments of component technologies to actual urban development, are being pursued accelerated by the promotion of energy policy, and the view of the future city focusing on energy efficiency, stabilization, and diversity resulting from the utilization of information and communication technology and information linkage is sought after. The Great East Japan Earthquake gave a significant impact to the view on how buildings and cities should be for dealing with disasters and energy as the disaster’s details and scale of damages came to light. The result of the damage investigation suggested that the situation of damage and disaster prevention countermeasures that were proved effective varied depending on the area. In the restoration plan, it is essential to envision "Smart City" with the disaster prevention plan by area and energy usage incorporated in it. To this panel discussion, we will invite experts on homeland studies and Smart City projects, and discuss the concept of "Smart City" based on the research done so far in our committee and the Great East Japan Earthquake. We look forward to having a wide range of participants from experts in the field of architecture and urban development to the general public.
