Announcing the successful fundamental test of a sensor network using ultra low energy (1 bit per second at 3 nanowatts) UWB wireless communication
Hitachi, Ltd. / YRP Ubiquitous Networking Research Laboratory
Updated 2005/9/28

Hitachi, Ltd., in conjunction with YRP Ubiquitous Networking Research Laboratory, has developed a fundamental testing apparatus of UWB(Ultra Wide Band) wireless communication.
Using the mechanism in line with the suggestions of the IEEE standard (IEEE802.15.4a), which is drawing an attention as a wireless technology for sensor networking, the following experimental results were obtained: The simulation has verified the possibility of an accuracy in position detection to within 30cm.
The test also demonstrated very low energy wireless transmission of 1 bps (bit per second) at 3 nanowatts (1 nanowatt being equal to one billionth of a watt).
Fast transmission over the transmission distance 10m at the transmission speed of 10Mbps and over 30 m at 250 Kbps was also achieved.

Announcement regarding the XILINX extension board which can be connected to all T-Engine Products
Updated 2005/6/8

The XILINX extension board" is connectable to all T-Engine and µT-Engine products, and its functions are enhanced by being fully equipped with an extension connector. For the first time in commercial FPGA, changing configuration from general-purpose flash memory is possible. The FPGA implemented on XILINX extension board has been expanded to 500,000 system gates, and therefore it can build circuits with sizes twice as large as before. Additionally, in the event that a connection to a network is required, the connection to networks is provided via an extension connector.

The World's Smallest 15mm x 15 mm Active Electronic Tag "Dice" Successfully Developed
YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory
Updated 2005/4/27

The YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory has successfully developed the world's smallest active electronic tag "Dice" with the size of 15mm x 15mm including the battery. The "Dice" uses very low-power 315 MHz radio wave for full-duplex communication at the distance of 10 meters (in full visibility of the other party). It has the anti-collision function that permits a single receiver to identify more than 1000 Dices simultaneously. The "Dice" was designed to conform with the specifications of the pT-Engine (pico T-Engine) of the T-Engine Forum.
"Dice" boasts the shrinking of its physical size and also the extremely low power consumption of of 7.6 µAh has been realized. It operates for approximately 2.3 years with a CR2032 coin battery (Theoretical estimate with an expected communication at 5 minute intervals), or it can operate for 5.5 months with the installed ultra-tiny secondary battery (again a theoretical estimate). Moreover, encrypted communication using DES is possible between the "Dice" and its receiver. An eTRON chip can be connected for stronger security. The "Dice" will be applied to various application fields from distribution, supply chain management to medicine tracing. Large numbers of "Dice" will be used for feasibility study experiments.
