Integrated Food Traceability System Verification Experiment started

T-Engine Forum announced that it will start "Integrated Food Traceability System Verification Experiment" using the Ubiquitous ID Technology in collaboration with MITSUKOSHI, LTD., KEIKYU STORE Corporation, University of Tokyo and others. This verification experiment will be conducted as part of the "2004 Food Traceability Development Activities" of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan.

T-Engine related products exhibited at "CommunicaAsia2004", the biggest Exhibition in South East Asia

The "15th Communica Asia 2004" was held at Singapore Expo from June 15th through 18th. This is one of the largest shows in the concerned technical field in South East Asia. Along with over 1500 exhibitors from 52 countries, T-Engine Forum, its 5 member companies and YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory participated and jointly exhibited T-Engine related products, Ubiquitous Communicators, etc. at T-Engine Application Development Center (TEADEC)Booth. The exhibition had a total of 40,000 visitors during the 4-day exhibition period. Many of them visited our booth, enthusiastically watching our exhibits and listening to exhibitors' explanation, and also our exhibits were introduced by many media organizations, which showed high interest in T-Engine in Asia.

T-Engine Forum's "Ubiquitous ID System" received an award "The Information and Communication Service System Prize" from the Chairman of the Council of Info-Communications Promotion Month.

On June 1st, 2004, T-Engine Forum's "Ubiquitous ID System" received "The Information and Communication Service System Prize" from the Chairman of the Council of Info-Communications Promotion Month (Chairman of the Council of Info-Communications Promotion Month: Mr. Shoichiro Toyoda), for our contribution to the application of communication in the future Ubiquitous Network Society - realizing a function to instantly display information related to physical objects such as commercial products, etc., and presenting the electronic tag usage/utilization models in conjunction with the application of high security technology, making our research achievements open to public, and the application of electronic tags in Produce Traceability System verification experiments, and so on. We believe that we owe this to the T-Engine Forum members who cooperate and contribute to T-Engine Forum activities at all times. We hope you will see this award as the appreciation of your activity by the society at large. We thank you for your past and future support and cooperation to T-Engine Forum activities.

Java Runtime Environment for T-Engine is developed and source code is open to T-Engine Forum members for free

YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory has developed the Java Runtime Environment that runs on the next generation embedded development platform "T-Engine" in collaboration with Applix Corporation. The source code for this Java Runtime Environment will be made open to the T-Engine Forum members free of charge from the beginning of June, 2004. The runtime implements Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME)CDC/Foundation Profile(FP)/Personal Basic Profile(PBP)and rich user interface development can be easily realized. The availability of the Java Runtime Environment as Reference Implementation now permits low-cost research assessment of the Java Technology on the T-Engine.

Chairman Sakamura gave a lecture to Robotics Society of America

On April 28th, 2004, Chairman Sakamura gave a plenary and keynote talk titled "T-Engine: The Open Development Platform for Ubiquitous Computing" at 2004 IEEE International Conference Robotics and Automation held in New Orleans, Louisiana in USA. The talk introduced the concept of "Computer Anywhere" and T-engine Project, and commanded a great interest from researchers in the field of robotics and automation, who are the potential users of real time systems.

The relationship with China has expanded greatly

On April 22nd , 2004, Chairman Sakamura made a special lecture on "IT TRENDS 2004" held in Beijing, China. At the subsequent meeting session, the concrete deployment plan in the future such as demonstration experiment using ucode within China was discussed. On the following day of 23rd, an agreement for mutual cooperation was reached. This includes the establishment of a new course on T-Engine at Peking University and Chairman Sakamura was given the title of visiting professor of Peking University. Also, the opening ceremony for "TRON Ubiquitous Technology Open Platform Laboratory" was held and the formal signing of the Business Cooperation with Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, which had been announced earlier took place.

An extra issue of of TRONWARE titled "T-Engine2" has been published by Personal Media Corporation. This book, a collection and re-organization of articles on T-Engine which appeared in the TRON Project-related information magazine,"TRONWARE", covers all the latest information on T-Engine boards and middleware. The book is available for 1,680 yen (sales tax included) at bookstores throughout Japan.

Agreement on Ubiquitous-related Business Cooperation with China and Korea

YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory and Ubiquitous ID Center have announced that they have signed a comprehensive agreement, including joint research on ubiquitous networking technology with Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and another similar agreement with RFID Association of Korea. It is hoped that these agreements will lead to the establishment of Ubiquitous ID Center and T-Engine Development Center in each country, and will start the interoperability experiments among them.

IC tag demonstration experiment in Ohi Logistics Center succeeds

YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory announced that it has conducted and successfully performed an IC tag demonstration experiment in Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Ohi Logistics Center in collaboration with MTI, a subsidiary of NYK Line. In this experiment, ucodes, T-Engine, and ubiquitous communicators, etc. were utilized to demonstrate the cargo management and the highly accurate 3D cargo position management in the warehouse.

"Committee for promoting project to support moving independently" created

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport decided to create "Committee for promoting project to support moving independently" of which aim is to establish an environment which allows "anyone, anywhere and anytime" to access such pieces of information as "routes", "means of transportation" or "destinations", as part of the project for realizing a"universal society", and appointed Ken Sakamura as the committee chairman, with the full support of YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory.

Two Types of RFID Tags by Fujitsu Authorized as the Standard ucode Tag

Ubiquitous ID Center has authorized two types of RFID tags, "MB89R116 Chip" and "MB89R118 Chip", made by Fujitsu Limited, as Ubiquitous ID Center Standard ucode tags (Class 1). These tag chips implement non-volatile memory (2K byte) and read and write data at a higher speed than traditional chips do.

TRON Project Announces Font Traceability System

TRON Project has successfully developed the font traceability technology that solves problem related to user-defined characters in the printing industry. By making use of TRON project research result that makes it possible to handle very large number of characters of the world, and Ubiquitous ID technology, the consistent character processing that Windows or Macintosh could not handle before will become possible on these systems.

The T-Kernel Source Code Open to the Public

The T-Kernel Source Code has been made open to the public. The T-Kernel is a realtime OS (operating system) which plays a core role in establishing and promoting the T-Engine project whose main objective is to realize distribution of middleware. The T-Kernel is free to use under a license condition called the T-License. Chairman Sakamura Giving Keynote Speach at "RFID International Symposium" in Korea

On February 5th, 2004, Chairman Sakamura gave a keynote lecture, "UNL's vision of Ubiquitous Computing -- Advanced Application of RFID Technology", at 2003 RFID International Symposium, as a special event which celebrated the establishment of the Korean RFID Association. The vision of Ubiquitous Computing as advanced application of RFID was introduced and greatly attracted the attention from the audience because of the prospect and practicality it has.

Ultra Tiny Mobile Unit, "UbiNet Pass ™AD-L", Developed

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd had announced that it had developed "UbiNet Pass ™AD-L" which uses T-Kernel, a realtime operating system kernel licensed by T-Engine Forum. UbiNet Pass ™AD-L can be used as electronic money, electronic tickets, and the PC authentication units, and uses a security chip, "eTRON/16Dual". This product is the first "T-Engine Appliance" which has been produced under the T-Engine Forum sanctioned license.

UC-Phone Presentation Meeting Held

On January 20th, 2004, T-Engine Forum held a UC-Phone presentation meeting at Shinagawa Prince Hotel. T-Engine Forum decided to hold this presentation meeting, because it would be a good opportunity to introduce the details of UC-Phone developed by YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory, in response to very many enquiries about UC Phone after the press release on December 3rd, last year. This time, T-Engine Forum explained the ucode resolution, the system components, protocols, and demonstrated the resolutions such as displaying the product information through the ucode-specific barcodes and electronic tags and changing what were contained in the contents server. T-Engine Forum is proud to announce that so many people participated in the meeting and responded by saying that the meeting was very informative one after all the demonstrations.

"Produce Traceability System" Goes into the Experimental Phase in Actual Stores

T-Engine Forum announced that sales experiments would start in actual stores from January 8th, as a part of the 2003 Food Traceability Development and Verification Experiments of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries: "Establishing Produce Traceability System using the Ubiquitous ID technology".
